W4: Research - Georgia's Look Into References

Extra Gum TV Ad

I am inspired by how the 'bad' food in the TV ad has been made to seem negative by giving them human characteristics. This makes the viewer more able to equate them with being the bad guys.

Easy-Off Bam Cleaner TV Ad

I like the quote "Bam and the dirt is gone" because it is so recognisable. I think that we can try and make this quote, or something quite similar to it, our tagline for our poster campaign.

Roy Lichtenstein

We like his use of onomatopoeias, halftone dots, and flashes/stars. We think that by incorporating some of these elements into our concept it will make it more exciting and heroic.

W4S2: Class

We printed off all of the posters we had made overnight and got our peers and Phoebe to critique them.

Critique Comments:

  • The beach scene is too realistic looking/not cartoon enough
  • Shelby's new illustration style would be quite appealing for kids, maybe try making the superhero character in that style and insert him into one of those scenes
  • Like the plain sandy coloured background and also the white background with the beach cut out of a shape on it - play with these more
  • Maybe try brighter more saturated colours
  • There are three strong ideas - superhero character, simple vector-like illustrations, and onomatopoeia concept - so maybe try to merge all three into a cohesive style/approach

We also talked to Phoebe about our third item; the personalised storybook. She said that it would be too big of a task to undertake, even if we only made a short story, and that we should do something more simple like a mug etc that could still relate to our target audience.

W4S1: Class

We printed off our current poster design, looked at it up on the wall, and critiqued it.

  • Boy and beach still don't look quite the same style
  • Boy doesn't stand out from background
  • Too busy?
  • Needs copy! (Headline, call-to-action, where and when etc)
  • Remember to put logos on it
  • Think about narrative and hierarchy
  • Use brighter/more saturated colours

Baddies!

Background Drawing 1
I'm not sure about the blended paint style of this background I created - it might not fit with the block colour style we have been working with.

Background Drawing 2
Making a background that is more in the style of the character.

I wasn't sure about the gold cape as I thought it blended in with the sand too much. Here I changed the colour of the cape to green as I think green relates to the idea of rubbish more than gold. I chose a light green as I thought that a darker shade of green paired with the red t-shirt would start to resemble christmas colours. I also gave the character gloves as after going to the beach clean-up in Lyall Bay I realised that gloves were important when picking up gross and sometimes dangerous things. We want our character to be a role model for children so he needs to promote safety.

W3S2: Research - Shelby's Touchpoints Investigation

These are the touch points I have found. Not all of them appeal to me however I can appreciate the way the material has been applied across all platforms. They use colour, type, style, layout, repetition to create a connection across all touchpoints.

W3S2: Research - Georgia's Touchpoints Investigation

This is a good example of how a concept can be applied to a broad variety of touchpoints.

I like how this concept uses four bold main colours.

This is also a good example of how a concept can be applied to a broad variety of touchpoints. I like how the print and web based mediums don't have to look exactly them same, like reproductions of each other, to still look cohesive.

This is also a good example of how a concept can be applied to a broad variety of touchpoints.

I like how the idea is developed from print to web. And how they can still look very cohesive  just by using the same FADPs.

It is interesting to see how one illustration and a simplistic colour scheme can be work in so many different mediums  just by being slightly altered.

I like the visual impact of the glitter burst and how this strong aesthetic has been carried through the different media.

I like how one strong shape had been carried through multiple platforms. I also really like how the flyer has been cut out into this shape.

I like how the banners, poster, and coffee cup are quite full of illustrations to be eye-catching, yet the brochure and website are quite pared back in terms of composition (yet they still contain some of the illustrations to create a strong visual link).

W3: Primary Research - Lyall Bay Beach Clean-Up

On Saturday morning we went to a beach clean-up in Lyall Bay.
We thought it would be a great opportunity to get some firsthand experience on our topic.

This was a good experience, but more because of the knowledge that we were doing something to help the environment and the community rather than because it was particularly fun or exciting.

Even though it was a sunny day it was very cold and super windy on the beach.
The beach was sometimes sandy and other times comprised of tiny pebbles. There were sand dunes with tussocks and other plants growing on them.
The rubbish that we found was mostly plastic like candy bar wrappers, muesli bar wrappers, lollipop sticks and also these tiny wheel-shaped things that we later found out were from the Moa Point Treatment Station. There was also a lot of natural debris like seaweed and driftwood on the beach.

While we were wandering along the beach picking up rubbish we watched how other people got involved in the beach clean-up. We were particularly interested in observing how children took to the task as they are our target audience.
The kids all seemed to be there with either one or both of their parents and also often with siblings.
They seemed to be pretty excited about finding rubbish and/or holding the bag that the rubbish got put in.
